Ugandans form Obama support groupPublished: 16/02/08

Ugandans have formed a group to mobilise support for Kenyan born- senator, Barack Obama for the US presidency.
The Obama Solidarity Group (OSP)  launched its campaign at Makerere University on January 18, according to one of the members.

"Our group has been formed to see that our candidate gets support from not only Americans but other parts of the world including Uganda because he is a symbol of Africa in a western democracy," Mr Silver Mulindwa, a third year student at the university, said.

Police quells Makerere students riotPublished: 16/02/08

ANTI-RIOT Police, backed by regular Police, yesterday morning moved in fast to contain a demonstration organised by Makerere University students. A group of students, mainly from Lumumba and Nkrumah halls, had by as early as 2:00am mobilised their colleagues to protest what they called the ‘sabotage of their education’ by the university.

The students want the demands of their lecturers, who are on strike over pension money and teaching materials, to be addressed so that they can resume teaching.

KAMPALA

THIRTY homesteads selected from every sub-county in Uganda will be given free capital for investing in high value agricultural products.

The radical programme starts this financial year and the first phase will see government distributing some Shs60 billion, already budgeted for under the National Agricultural Advisory Services project.

The dramatic strategy was disclosed by President Yoweri Museveni on Wednesday while on a working tour in Bushenyi District. The decision was arrived at during a recent Cabinet retreat in Entebbe when the ministers drew up a framework for fighting poverty this financial year.

THE cash-strapped Makerere University last year spent over sh100m to send its top managers to a conference organised by Ugandans in the United States.

Four top officials attended the 19th Ugandan North American Association (UNAA) annual convention in San Francisco, USA, in September 2007.

They were the vice-chancellor, Prof. Livingstone Luboobi, the university secretary, Sam Akorimo, the bursar, Ben Byambabazi, and the director of resource mobilisation, Godfrey Kagoro.

Makerere to sack striking lecturersPublished: 13/02/08

MAKERERE University Council yesterday ordered the striking lecturers to resume teaching or resign. The 2,500 lecturers, through their umbrella group, the Makerere University Academic Staff Association (MUASA), are protesting lack of teaching materials and mismanagement of the staff pension scheme.

A source said the council recommended that those who did not resume work by tomorrow would be sacked and their jobs advertised.
