And when he demanded all constituency tallies, he found some figures were not the ones he had personally seen, he said.

Kenyan party to defy protest banPublished: 03/01/08

Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga has insisted a banned mass march will go ahead in Nairobi on Thursday despite pleas for post-election unrest to stop.

Refusing to accept defeat to Mwai Kibaki in the 27 December presidential election, Mr Odinga's party boycotted crisis talks with the new president.

The US ambassador to Nairobi has urged the two to sit down and talk.

More than 300 people have been killed and at least 70,000 driven from their homes across Kenya since Sunday.

UGANDA'S economy has grown by 7% in 2007 despite power shortages and floods in northern and eastern Uganda, President Yoweri Museveni said in his New Year’s message to the nation. He expects similar growth figures for next year.

“The prospects for the economy in 2008 are even brighter. GDP growth is expected to continue at a pace of at least 7% per annum.”
Museveni attributed this success to a growth in services and industry, particularly the construction, manufacturing and electricity sectors.

THE escalating political turmoil that has consumed Kenya since Mr Mwai Kibaki was declared the winner of a disputed presidential election on Sunday has already grimly echoed here with Uganda's economy starting to choke on fuel scarcity.

And the business community and government officials are steeling themselves for worse economic instability as Kenya, on whom landlocked Uganda depends for nearly all of her import and export trade, sinks further into tribal bloodletting.

The first casualty of the Kenyan chaos appeared to be fuel with reports indicating that pump prices across Kampala and much of the country yesterday have gone up and are fast running out of stocks.

Scores Dead in Kenya over poll crashesPublished: 31/12/07

A BBC reporter at a mortuary in the opposition stronghold of Kisumu saw about 40 bodies with gunshot wounds. A witness said police had opened fire.

There were running battles in Nairobi slums, and violence was reported in the coastal town of Mombasa.

Mwai Kibaki was officially re-elected president while Raila Odinga says he was robbed of victory by voting fraud.

Mr Odinga has called for a million-strong rally by supporters in Nairobi on Thursday.
