THE Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee yesterday halted plans by Gulu University to give away about 34.5 hectares of its land to potential investors.
At a meeting with the university’s officials, the MPs heard that the planned giveaway was meant to kickstart the establishment of an industrial park. The land was to be given out to investors by the Uganda Investment Authority. The university has 742 hectares of land.

THE port of Dar es Salaam is to handle half of Uganda’s cargo, Uganda’s transport minister has said.
Eng. John Nasasira, who is heading a government delegation to Tanzania, said this while meeting Tanzania Port Authority officials on Tuesday.
“The Government intends to have between 30% to 50% of its exports and imports pass through Tanzania. Uganda is committed to developing this Central Corridor route not only in the short-run but also in the long-run,” Nasasira said before the team visited the facilities at the port.

A PERSON who will present the best business idea will receive $50,000 (sh86m) in the ‘Start Your Business Competition,’ a World Bank-funded project, writes Peter Kaujju.
The project is aimed at stimulating entrepreneurship.
While the bank will provide grants, the Private Sector Foundation (PSFU) will implement the programme.
“The competition will also offer a platform for experimental learning and provide participants an opportunity to solidify their business concepts based on practical feedback and expert advice. They will learn how to develop saleable business plans and gain skills to present and market their plans,” Juliet Byaruhanga, the project coordinator, said.
