The chief mediator in the peace talks between the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA)
rebels and the Government has accused the rebels of recently kidnapping 55
children in South Sudan.
The United Nations Children’s Fund has also
said the LRA is still active in the DR Congo where they recently abducted over
200 people. “Youth have been abducted by the LRA,” South Sudan’s
Vice-President Riek Machar told Reuters as he left the remote Sudan-Congo
border, where he had camped since Thursday hoping to meet LRA commander Joseph
Kony.
“Why do they continue doing this and say they are committed to the
peace process?”
Kony, who is wanted for war crimes by the International
Criminal Court in The Hague, failed to appear for a planned signing ceremony.
“Kony said some key issues were not well communicated to him,” said
Machar, adding that the rebel leader requested for another meeting on April 26
in Ri-Kwangba with Machar, religious and cultural leaders from the north.
An LRA spokesman said Kony wanted guarantees of his safety and financial
security.
