Makerere University Kampala (MUK)
Established in 1922 as a humble technical school, Makerere University is one of the oldest and most prestigious Universities in Africa. In January of that year, the school, which was later renamed Uganda Technical College, opened its doors to 14 day students who began studying Carpentry, Building and Mechanics. The College soon began offering various other courses in Medical Care, Agriculture, Veterinary Sciences and Teacher Training. It expanded over the years to become a Center for Higher Education in East Africa in 1935. In 1937, the College started developing into an institution of higher education, offering post-school certificate courses. In 1949, it became a University College affiliated to the University College of London. In 1963 it became the University of East Africa, offering courses leading to general degrees of the University of London. www.makerere.ac.ug

Makerere University Business School (MUBS)

Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST)

Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) was founded in 1989 when the National Resistance Council passed a Statute establishing the University. The University started as the second public university in Uganda after Makerere University.
MUST took over and extensively modified the physical facilities of the former School of Midwifery and turned them into structures for the university. New structures have since been added. The University now has three faculties and two institutes. www.must.ac.ug
Uganda Martyrs University (Nkozi)

Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) whose main Campus is located at Nkozi 82 kms west of Kampala, the Capital of Uganda, on the Kampala-Masaka road, was started in October 1993 with 84 students and two academic departments, namely the Institute of Ethics and Development Studies and the Faculty of Business Administration and Management.

Ndejje University

Ndejje University was first established in 1992 under a different name and ownership.  The University acquired its present status in 1995 under the Anglican Diocese of Luweero.  It continued operating under this narrow ownership base until 2002 when the ownership base was enlarged to include all the six Church of Uganda Dioceses in the Buganda Region. www.ndejjeuniversity.ac.ug

Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU)
IUIU was established in 1988 by the Organisation of Islamic Conference to serve the English Speaking African Muslim community in Southern and Eastern Africa. Starting with 80 students and a single campus at Mbale (Uganda), the university now boasts of 2 campuses and a study centre.
The university has also graduated more than 3000 students in such disciplines as Education, Management studies, Arts & Social Sciences and Islamic studies.  www.iuiu.ac.ug
Kampala International University (KIU)

Kampala International University (KIU), commenced operation as a private University in October 2001. Located in Kansanga, a rapidly growing suburb of Kampala, KIU is only 3 Km from Kampala city centre and 2 Km from the shores of Lake Victoria, which is the largest fresh water lake in the world. Uganda Christian University
Uganda Christian University is located 23 kilometres from Kampala, in Mukono town, on the the main road to Jinja. It is a private university, chartered and fully accredited by the President of the Republic of Uganda, through the Ministry of Higher Education and Sports, and the National Council for Higher Education.
UCU is owned by the Province of the Church of Uganda, and has campuses in Eastern, Western and Northern Uganda.

The University was born out of Bishop Tucker Theological College. The college was founded in 1913 in response to a growing need for pastors in the Church. www.ucu.ac.ug

Busoga University

Busoga University is a private (non-profit making) institution founded by the Church of Uganda under the Busoga Diocese   It is located at Iganga CMS educational village, 32km along the Jinja-Tororo Highway. – www.busogauniversity.ac.ug 

 

Aga Khan University Uganda
The Aga Khan University (AKU) is a coeducational research university spread over three continents. It was granted its charter in 1983 as Pakistan's first private, autonomous university.[1] AKU was founded by His Highness the Aga Khan, and is part of the Aga Khan Development Network. AKU is an international University with 11 teaching sites spread over 8 countries - Afghanistan, Kenya, Pakistan, Tanzania, Uganda, Syria, Egypt and the United Kingdom. Its principal campus is located in the metropolitan city of Karachi, Pakistan with another major teaching hospital in Kenya. A 450-million dollar campus is also planned for Arusha, in north-eastern Tanzania to be built in the next 15 years. – No website

Central Buganda University
The University was started as a mission project in February 2000 by Dr. John Veldhuis, a volunteer in mission of the Anglican Church of Canada. The university fills the need for higher education for qualified students, teachers and clergy. Kyambogo University
Kyambogo University (KYU) is a public university in Uganda. It was established in 2001 as the third public university in Uganda. The university is located on Kyambogo Hill, a few kilometers from Kampala, along the Kampala-Jinja highway.

Nkumba University
Nkumba University has evolved from humble beginnings as a community Kindergarten Scholl established in 1951. it was an outcome of the initiative and vision of Ssalongo kintu, who owned a retail shop in Abayita Ababiri. On the July 29, 1951 at 9.00am. Ssalongo Kintu invited two of his best friends: Charles Kisitu-Ffulu, a Muluka (Parish) Chief of Nkumba then, and Zefania Mpanga, a civil servant residing in the same area. Ssalongo Kintu mooted the idea of starting a a community school. Their confabulation led to the establishment of a school for their infants. www.nkumbauniversity.ac.ug

Bugema University
Bugema University is located on a 640-acre piece of land in Luwero district, Bamunanika county, Kalagala sub-county. The institution started in 1948 as a training school for teachers and pastors for the Seventh-day Adventist Church in East Africa. By then it was called Bugema Missionary Training School. Later, the name changed to Bugema Missionary College and then to Bugema Adventist College.  In 1978, Bugema Adventist College graduated its first degree class with Bachelor of Theology. The College expanded and by the late 1980’s curricula for Business and Education were put in place.
